10 tips about driving in Kerala



After driving around 500 kms in a week on rural Kerala roads (mostly hilly terrain) using Maruti Alto 800 2016 model and Mahindra Bolero, here are 10 tips for new drivers:



1. Interior roads are full of sharp bends, so you must slow down vehicle at turns. Also, follow rule of thumb - Stick to your side of the road - Left Hand Traffic, no matter even if you find empty roads.

2. Told by local driver to blow horn on every turn. You never know when someone might be coming speedily.

3. Roads are superb (atleast in Mar'2017) almost negligible potholes and sufficiently wide. Roads may be little narrow on hills but still good enough when compared to northern India.

4. You must know required air pressure (psi) for the vehicle you are driving. Though you may find a good number of filling stations all around but at times there might not be anyone to fill air or the machine might be out of order. One day I had to visit almost 4-5 filling stations just to get air.

5. At junctions/ crossroads you must slow down your vehicle and let other pass. This is Kerala ethics (at least outside big cities) and new for me. Driving for years in northern India earlier I only knew to push your vehicle before anyone else.

6. Wait patiently before overtaking. At times it may be around 10-15 mins before you find a clear way.

7. KSRTC - Kerala State Road Transport Corporation. Their buses especially the FP or Fast Passenger are really nuts. Get yourself 2-4 days to understand how they ply.

8. Speed bumps (or speed breakers) will be coming sometimes 6-8 altogether. So in case you are driving a small vehicle then you must slow down considerably.

9. Seat belt for driver is compulsory and avoid high speeds as interceptor vehicles are common.

10. Enjoy scenic beauty all around but after safely parking vehicle.
