मिले ना फूल तो काँटों से दोस्ती कर ली
इसी तरह से बसर हमने ज़िन्दगी कर ली

अब आगे जो भी हो अंजाम देखा जाएगा
खुदा तराश लिया और बंदगी कर ली

नज़र मिली भी न थी और उनको देख लिया
ज़ुबान खुली भी न थी और बात भी कर ली

ना रब्ब अर्श मुअल्ला उत्ते
ना रब्ब खाने काबे - हु
ना रब्ब इल्म किताबी लब्भा
ना रब्ब विच महराबे - हु
गंगा तीरथ मूल ना मिल्या
पैंदे बे-हिसाबे - हु
जद दा मुर्शद मिल्या बाहु
छुट्टे सब अज़ाबे - हु

Neither is God above the highest heaven
nor is God in the Ka’ba - He!
neither was God found in bookish knowledge
nor is God in the mosque’s niche - He!
(even) on pilgrimage to the Ganges,
the source was not found
(despite) going measureless distances - He!
when the Guide was found by Bahu
over were all the torments - He!

I have again and again grown like grass.
I have experienced seven hundred and seventy moulds.
I died from minerality and become vegetable;
…And from vegetative-ness I died and become animal.
I died from animality and became man.

Then why fear disappearance through death?
Next time I shall die,
Bring forth wings and feathers like angels.
